About us
Global Care is a British registered, international Christian children's charity, with charity status in countries including Romania and Uganda.
For 25+ years we have pioneered initiatives supporting needy children and young people in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America.
We rely on churches, schools, individuals and families, through fundraising and sponsorship, to help us develop new and existing projects.
We aim to support the poorest and most vulnerable children and young people, through education; vocational training, feeding and welfare care. For some we provide residential care.
Our experience shows this approach brings effective long-term solutions, leading to independence and self-sufficiency.
A brief history
Global Care’s founder, Ron Newby, had an executive career in social work. In 1983 he was asked to visit war-torn Uganda, in the aftermath of Idi Amin’s regime. This led directly to the founding of Global Care – to support the desperate children Ron met.
Since then, dozens more innovatory projects have been pioneered by Ron and a growing number of workers and volunteers who shared his vision.
In 1999 Ron received an MBE, recognising his work on behalf of vulnerable children worldwide. Ron died in 2008.
Today, Global Care continues to support needy children and young people in over 40 projects worldwide.
Our strategy
We help needy children by intervening through emergency relief aid, innovatory development schemes and childcare programmes.
We focus on the poorest children on earth; those abandoned or orphaned, with little or no education; living in slums or as street children.
Every project is established within the local community and managed by local Christian staff, overseen by the UK management team.
Our support for these children is for the long term. This means addressing individual needs, sometimes with dedicated health or psychological care. This care is in addition to our more general programmes.
Long-term improvement often cannot happen without also supporting families and communities – so some of our projects have a wider community focus.
Global Care works in partnership with numerous other charities and agencies, seeking to tackle root causes of poverty and provide permanent positive change.
